The Hungarian State Opera, the Hungarian National Ballet Institute, the Foundation for Ballet Students of the Hungarian State Opera, with the support of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme, will organize a large-scale international event this summer.

TIMETABLE OF THE COMPETITION

I.

Registration and video submission / 06 02 2023 - 30 04 2023 1

The competitors can be:

  • Any Hungarian or foreign ballet student over the age of 18, or the legal guardian (e.g. parent) of any underage ballet student, may register for the competition by completing and sending the application form, and uploading a video material to the designated registration portal.
  • The registration may be submitted by any academy, institute, private school, amateur school or registered ballet institution (hereinafter referred to as “Institution”) in Hungary or abroad on behalf of the student, provided that the necessary consent is obtained from the competitor or his/her legal representative (hereinafter referred to as “Guardian”). 2

The registration:

  1. completing and sending the application form correctly
  2. payment of the registration feeEUR 50.00 / video link.
  3. uploading of the introductory video link (the content of the introductory video must be no earlier than 1 September 2022)
  4. The jury will analyse and evaluate the submitted professional material and will decide which candidates will advance to the professional application stage (see point II below). The organiser will inform the candidates of the result.

 


1 The Organiser is unable to verify the accuracy of the data, therefore the person completing the registration form (hereinafter referred to as the Registrant) shall be liable for all legal consequences arising from incorrect or erroneous data, and the Organiser excludes all liability in this regard. If the registration is done by other than the competitor, the Organiser also excludes all liability for any disputes arising from their ineligibility to participate in the competition.

  • Registration will be considered invalid if the registration form has not been properly completed, or the video material has not been uploaded, or the registration fee has not been paid at the time of registration. The Registrant shall ensure that the exact amount of the registration fee is credited to the bank account number provided by the Organiser (the Organiser does not bear the bank transaction costs of the transfer, so if the amount credited is less than the required amount due to bank transaction costs, the registration shall be deemed invalid).
  • Any competitor may be disqualified from the competition if they have provided false information, or if the entry criteria are not met by any given competitor.
  • At the request of the Organiser, the competitor must prove their identity and age by submitting/presenting an official document (e.g. personal identity card). In the absence of this the competitor may be disqualified from the competition.
  • There is no limit on the number of entries made by an institution. It is the responsibility of the Registrant to determine the appropriate professional category of the competitor during the registration process.
  • It is generally expected that the student is accompanied by a professional mentor.
  • Both the Registrant and the competitor shall warrant that no third party has any right in the musical works used for the pieces that would restrict or prevent their use. By accepting this Policy, the Registrant and the competitor shall warrant that no third party has any right in the choreography of the piece that would restrict or prevent the Organiser from using it. The Registrant and the competitor shall be liable for all resulting legal consequences, and the Registrant and the competitor shall immediately relieve the Organiser from any detrimental legal consequences which may be asserted against the Organiser.
  • The Jury will analyse and evaluate the professional materials submitted and decide which competitors may advance to the level of the professional application (see Section II below). The Organiser will notify the competitors of their results.

II.

Professional Application / 01 05 - 31 05 2023 3 

  1. Qualifying competitors will indicate which piece they wish to choose from the Professional Programme Pool provided by the Organiser, and other details of their Professional Programme
  2. The Organiser will collect, organise and confirm the data provided and the professional information/materials in accordance with the relevant Privacy Policy.
  3. Qualifying competitors must pay an entry fee, of which amount and content are:

EUR 25.00 / 1 competitor / piece

  • administrative contract
  • Entry of 1 coreography / variation / piece
  • evaluation of professional attendance in workshops and masterclasses
  • gala event

For an extra fee additional choreographies can be entered: EUR 25.00 / piece

Successful competitors may choose from the following options for booking accommodation:

  • Option1.:

    • EUR 71 / person / night in a double premium room with half board or
    • EUR 113 / person / night in a single premium room with half board.

    Both rates include: indoor adventure pool, wellness, saunas, steam room, separate secluded beach, free parking. Organized daily shuttle service to the race, Hybridart HBGPV Lounge, Skybar reception, use of ballet room, sailing program, Bondoro Festival, tennis courts etc.

  • Option2.:
    Arrangement and booking of optional accommodation at your own expense in one of the available accommodation facilities in the area during the period.

 


3 The professional application is conditional upon the competitor (or their legal representative) returning the signed version of the User Agreement, uploaded on the competition website, to the Organiser no later than the closing date for submission of the professional applications. The competitor must present the original copy of the User Agreement to the Organiser at the competition venue. In the absence of this the competitor may be disqualified from the competition.

  • The Organiser has the right to determine the number of competitors in the competition and to change the number of competitors.
  • Registration for workshops and master classes is optional and subject to a fee.

 

III.

Competition and Assessment by the Jury / 26 06 2023 – 29 06 2023

-  Qualified competitors will demonstrate their skills by performing the piece(s) indicated by them and confirmed by the Organiser.

-  The Organiser will publish the list of awarded competitors online on the competition website (https://www.hbgpv.hu/en/)

Competitors may take part in professional programmes, workshops and courses that complement the competition, but also support the jury's judging and the professional work of the competitors.

30% of the competitors will qualify in the finals.

IV.

Gala event / 29 06 2023

The best competitors will present their pieces at the final event.

EVALUATION & PRIZES

Competition evaluation

Members of the Jury will evaluate the competitors’ performance individually. Each Jury Member can give up to 30 points for each piece. The final score of the competitors will be the sum of the points awarded by the Jury for each piece.

The variation with the highest score will be danced by the competitor in the finals in the case of minimum 2 danced variation.

The decision of the Jury must be respected and accepted by all. It is the sole decision of the jury whether to award a prize in a given category.

The Organiser reserves the right to take action in the event of non-compliance with the rules. This may include transferring the dancer to another category or disqualifying the dancer.

Additional professional scholarships and gift packages may be awarded by the Jury.

The selected competitors will have the opportunity to participate in a short-term summer course organised by the Opera and offered by the Hungarian National Ballet Institute. The selected competitors will be entitled to participate in ballet classes and sessions held by the Organiser, including ballet masters from the Hungarian National Ballet and the Hungarian National Ballet Institute, where they will learn the basics of classical ballet and related subjects. The courses take place from 3 to 7 July and 10 to 15 July 2023 in Budapest, Hungarian State Opera House.

It is the sole decision of the Jury whether to award a prize in a given category.

COMPETITION RULES

On the basis of the professional applications, the Organiser will draw up a competition programme, which will be displayed in several places at the competition venue and published on the competition website.

The timetable for the competition programme is indicative and performances must be ready for competition 45 minutes before the scheduled performance time.

Competitors must follow the course of the competition and arrive on time at the designated area in front of the stage before their performance.

Good sportsmanship and respect for fellow competitors is expected throughout the competition and during the results announcement.

During the competition, it is the duty and responsibility of the Guardian or escort to supervise competitors. Only competitors are allowed on the competition stage and backstage area. Competitors must be fit to compete at the competition. Liability insurance must be taken out for competitors and their escorts. The Organiser shall not be liable for any injury to a competitor or their escort (including injuries sustained during classes, rehearsals, workshops or any travel related event associated with the competition).

If a competitor’s condition before or during the competition is such that their performance is in doubt (e.g. injured and in need of medical attention), the Organiser reserves the right to cancel the competitor’s entry. The Organiser also reserves the right to require a medical certificate if there is any doubt as to the competitor’s fitness to compete.

The Organiser has the right to take action in the event of non-compliance with the rules, in which case the Organiser will either transfer the competitor to another category or, if justified, disqualify the competitor from the competition.

The Organiser accepts no responsibility for any valuables or property lost, stolen or left behind.

It is not allowed on stage:

  • to use pyrotechnics,
  • to soil or damage the stage in any way.

No individual or special lighting is allowed during competition. All pieces must be presented with the same stage lighting (working light).

Competitors who have reached the stage of professional application must send the music for their piece in MP3 format to the Organiser within 5 working days of notification. Competitors must also bring the music on a USB stick to the competition venue and make it available to the Organiser on request, stating the competitor’s number, name and title of the music.

All participants attend the event at their own risk. The Event must not be attended when under the influence of intoxicants, narcotics or other mind-altering substances, even if a valid registration is held.

Any competitor, escort or visitor who fails to comply with the Conditions of Entry, the Rules of the Event or of the institute where the Event is being held, or the instructions of security or other law enforcement officials, may be ejected by the Organiser in order to ensure the safe conduct of the Event. No compensation may be claimed from the Organiser in the event of exclusion for such reasons.

In the case of an open-air competition, the Organiser has the option of announcing a reserve day (rain date). If a rain date has been announced, the Organiser may decide to hold the competition on the rain date. The competitor has no right to withdraw or claim any compensation if the Event is held on the rain date.

Depending on the number of applicants, the Organiser reserves the right to change the venue, the date and any other conditions affecting the organisation of the Event.

The Organiser shall have the right to use and publish the image, voice and/or name of the competitor in connection with the competition without further compensation or permission and to use the footage or any part thereof in print or other advertising platform.

In the event of force majeure (war, riot, act of terrorism, strike, accident, fire, blockade, flood, natural disaster, severe power failure or any other unforeseen and unavoidable obstacle beyond the control of the Organiser), the Organiser shall not be liable for any loss or damage caused by such events.

The legal relationship between the Organiser, the Registrar and the Competitor and any other person affected by these Rules shall be governed by Hungarian law. The parties agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the Hungarian courts in case of any dispute.

ABOUT US

Mission:
The aim of the event is to nurture talent, create tradition and promote ballet education and the art of ballet in Hungary. In 2023, the Hungarian Ballet Grand Prix will be organised for the first time as a classical and contemporary dance competition for young ballet dancers, with the aim of creating a tradition. The event, which creates cultural value, also puts Veszprém on the map for the local, regional and international audience.

By conveying authentic professional values, the Hungarian Ballet Grand Prix lays the foundations for a series of events that are intended to become an indispensable part of the Hungarian and international dance culture in the future.
